When Barack Became President
Last night, I was overcome, with tears of joy
I cried as though I had delivered a new, baby boy
Many said he couldn’t do it; he hasn’t a chance or a clue
Well to those doubting Thomases I say, “He showed you!”
For some time now, the face of America has changed
Yet America refused to recognize it and shut her eyes and sought more gain
Well today, we embrace the face of one, who looks just like us
One that understands the struggle…the anger of going to the back of the bus
Dr. King said, “I may not get there with you” but dear, sweet brother you are here
In spirit and in truth…and we are not doubtful and there is an absence of fear
Finally, America knows that the so-call, “Minority” is actually in the Majority
Not only do we “count” as a people but our cast vote also counts and matters
No longer will we be cast aside; put down/mocked and our dreams shattered
Today family, we stand tall; filled with pride, dignity and tears…not of grief
But of grace and mercy, with sighs of relief because in our time…beyond belief
Of our forefathers, who shed blood, sweat and tears
Upon whose backs and minds, this country was reared
We rise, not only to the occasion but in the minds of the oppressor
In hopes of bringing dignity to our new president…to America, (God bless her)
Thank you Lord, Jesus, for your outstretched hand
For encamping your angels around Barack…your child, this man
Who’s stepped out on faith and prepared to lead us all
On a journey, so deferred, upon your name Lord, we call
We honor and revere you…as Barack continues the fight
While allowing you, Lord, to further reveal…your purpose, for his life.
